Tendani Phillip Nephawe, better known as Mutendas in local Tshivenda soul music circles, has given his fans the real taste of his music after releasing his 18th album, Tshelede a i furiwi, last week.

The album has made an impact on the tough music market and it is receiving massive airplay on national and regional radio stations. Nephawe has sold thousands of copies in his 20-year career in music and he boasts more than 30 awards.

Nephawe said he was inspired by the music of the Soul Brothers to start his own band more than 20 years ago. “Soul Brothers, together with their leader, David Masondo, played very good music and I fell in love with them. I started my musical career by playing drumbaza (a homemade instrument made of an old oil tin and rubber bands) while I was 12 years old,” said the musician, who has a large following and previously performed in Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Malawi and Namibia.

His latest offering comprises 11 entertaining songs: Ni kha di nkoloda, Ni vhee tshelede, Tshelede a i furiwi, Dziofisini, No no kangwa, Mbilu yanga i a rwa, Magona ha tsha tenda, Nnditsheni, Amatenten, U tshi la wa fura and Dr Masala. Composed, arranged and produced by Nephawe himself, the album was recorded at Winman Studios and engineered by the award-winning sound engineer Emanuel Mamphogoro.

With Mutendas himself on lead guitar and vocals, Madoda Ntshingila on bass, Ronald Mashimbyi on keyboards and Life Timbeva on drums, the album is a must-have for true music lovers who really know what they want in the musical world.

However, Mutendas said he would never forget to thank all the people who had played a role in his musical career. “I cannot mention them all by name because they are too many. I recognize their contribution because I am what I am because of them. I will always worship my fans because their support is massive. I therefore dedicate this new album to all the people who contributed towards my success in my musical career because I wouldn’t have made it on my own.”
