Job Thanyani makes big comeback

Veteran musician Job Thanyani (71) of Tshisahulu outside Thohoyandou was one of the first artists to have a full band in the Vhembe region.

An accomplished accordion and piano player, he played alongside the likes of stars such as Moruti Ndlovu in the early eighties. He released two albums and both did well in the gospel market at the time.

As fate would have it, conmen purporting to have been sent by him from Johannesburg conned his wife and took his musical instruments away. That was way back in 1986, and that was the last time he saw his musical set. That was a major setback to his music career as he was only left with his accordion.

He called it quits but continued composing songs, using his accordion. Now, 31 years later, Thanyani has made a major comeback and is setting the stage ablaze. This follows the release of his third album, Savhatha. The album, released only a fortnight ago, comprises nine tracks and contains three new offerings, with the rest being old remixed numbers.The album is making ripples in gospel music circles.

"Since quitting live music many years ago, I have been under severe pressure from fans asking when I would be giving them the music I used to give them. I succumbed to pressure and towards the end of last year I approached well-known musician and studio owner Nelton Dama of the Eazy Road to Fame Recording Studios at Tshifulanani." They then decided to cooperate and the final product is currently on the market.

"The music is good and I urge my fans to support this one as something very good is in the pipeline. Already I have enough materials for a new album that will be ready by June.” He also adds that he is currently preparing a live band and will start with live performances soon.

Studio owner and producer Nelton Dama said Thanyani was one of the best musicians he had worked with. "He knows his story and working with him was just free-flowing and that is the reason we came out with such a massive bomb," he said.
