“Ndi ene uyu?” (Is this the one?). This was the reaction from a die-hard listener of community radio Musina FM when he saw “the lady with the golden voice”, Sharon Mpho Matamela, for the first time.

Though Sharon does not have a distinctive posture, she does exceptionally well behind the microphone a she makes radio more educational, entertaining and informative. Because of her dedication and hard work, it only took two years for her to climb the career ladder at Musina FM.

“I joined the station as a newsreader in 2015 after successfully passing the auditions. I was promoted to the position of news editor the following year. After some few months as a news editor, the radio station management gave me the responsibilities of a programme manager, the position I presently hold.”

She said that she planned and developed the schedule of programmes for the station in conjunction with the station manager and station management committee, “while at the same time ensuring that the station’s output complies with the policy guidelines of the broadcast industry. More importantly, I have to make sure that all programmes go on air as scheduled, thereby making me an all-rounder and substitute for every presenter who cannot make it to the station for various reasons.”

Due to a shortage of staff, Sharon also presents A re aganeng, a programme that deals with real-life issues weekdays between 09:00 and 12:00. “I have to make sure that I’m fully prepared when I go to the studio on a daily basis. Continuous reading, research and the love of my work contribute to the success of my show.”

Born in Musina, Sharon grew up and attended school at Masisi village. She passed her Grade 12 at Tshikundamalema High School in 2012 and could not realize her dream of studying media studies because of a lack of funds. “I am saving some money to be able to further my studies in journalism or radio broadcasting. My dream is to see myself joining one of the national radio stations in the near future.”
