A radio dee-jay at Univen FM, Oscar “Dj Heatwave” Mudau, believes that he sits in the right place at a community radio station where he is able to reach thousands of listeners and instil a change of sorts in society.

“I have always dreamed about changing the lives of young people, especially those from unfortunate backgrounds,” he said. “Although I grew up in a poor community, I always knew I would eventually change the lives of the less fortunate. When I got the chance to be on radio, I knew my dream had been fulfilled.”

The 29-year-old dee-jay presents the Univen Community Drive between 15:00 – 18:00 on weekdays.

This resident of Tshitomboni is currently studying towards an honours degree in arts for an education and linguistics qualification.

He said that he knew that being on air was not the end of his quest for a platform from which he could relay messages to promote a positive attitude to the youth. “I had to understand why I was on air,” he said. “I knew I wasn’t just there to entertain, but to educate and revive the hope of young people in rural areas.”

He said that his talent was something he started displaying from a young age, and that people from his community were always encouraging when they noticed his talent because he used to imitate radio presenters. “I participated in many radio auditions, in fact more than 10 times with different radio stations,” he said.

He said growing up in the rural village life had never been easy since he had been raised by his grandmother, who depended on a social grant for living. “I used to walk more than eight kilometres to a secondary school in the nearby village of Dididi,” he said.

He told Limpopo Mirror that he was also inspired by the late legendary newsreader Mbulungeni Mafenya Mphaphuli. “People used to call me Mbulungeni Mafenya Mphaphuli because, as a youngster, I had imitated him,” he said.

Despite his success, he believes he has a lot to accomplish. “I go to schools to warn pupils about the dangers of making bad choices,” he said. “I have a supportive wife, Tshifhiwa, who believes in me.”
