Mapungubwe festival launched

Local musicians stand a chance to shine and showcase their talent, following the launch of the 17th Mapungubwe Music festival.

The launch, held at the Mapungubwe World Heritage Site on Monday, was attended by Thovhele Vho-Gole Mphaphuli, Limpopo Arts and Culture MEC Thandi Moraka, councillors from different municipalities, chiefs and local musicians.

According to Moraka, the event will be a youth festival that will be held at 8 December at the Polokwane Cricket Club, and the main festival will be held on 15 December at the same venue. She said the budget for the event was R7 million. “Events like this festival positively contribute towards improving the economic growth of the region through tourism and job creation,” Moraka said.

“Our main aim is not to make profit from this festival, but to market our province and show our talent. The money we are going to collect will help to reduce some of our expenditure. In total, we are going to have more than 40 artists who will perform, with most artists being from Limpopo,” said Moraka.

According to her, some of the artists who will perform at the festival are Oliver Mtukudzi, Makhadzi, Colbert Mukwevho, Dr Malinga, Selaelo Selota, Jonas Gwangwa, Steve Kekana, Condry Ziqubu, Benny Mayengani, Vusi Nova, Joe Shirimani, Sipho "Hotstix " Mabuse, Lady Zamar and many more. The entrance fee will be R100 and tickets are available at Computicket.
