Disco artist finds happiness in music

Mashudu Badzhi (26) from the Mpheni area, more commonly known as Shudu Gal, always wanted people to enjoy her talent. The disco musician, who finds happiness in singing, recalled that music had always been part of her life.

“I used to sing a lot when I was young, because that’s what I enjoy most. At school I was part of the choir and even at church,” she said.

Her journey in the industry only started about four years ago. She recalled that, at the beginning, things were not easy, but she endured all the challenges until her first two albums were produced in 2017 and last year.

She told Limpopo Mirror that when she started in 2015, her first producer gave up on her. At this time, Shudu Gal was focused on Gospel songs. “I tried many places to find a good producer, but that didn’t work until late 2016 when I started singing wedding songs,” she recalled.

She then met Rhulani, who helped her in his studio as she was desperately looking forward to releasing her first album. Four tracks were released, but the hopes of an album faded.

In 2017, her life turned around, this time for the better.  She recorded and released her first album, entitled Tshibaisigira, featuring tracks such as Lufuno, Mmawe, and Tshinwe na Tshinwe.

Last year she started working with DJ Marindi, who helped her record her second album, containing eight songs, titled Ndi Shudu. “It’s been tough, but if you know what you want, you need to be brave and work hard in order to reach your dreams,” she said.

From the many lessons learnt throughout her journey, Shudu Gal reckoned that writing about what people were doing and singing about attracted many fans. “I realised that I have to make good music and I want to go out there and let the public know about life in the music business.”

“It is not as easy as it may look, especially when you don’t have a manager or someone to help you,” she said.
