Mashudu enjoys creating doll houses

Mashudu Phaswana is a young artist who lets his work do the talking.

Phaswana, who hails from Tshitomboni Tsha Mmbubana, creates doll houses that capture the imagination of many local people.

The 24-year-old said that his desire to be an artist started when he was studying at Tshinetise Primary School. "That time making doll houses was not my thing, but I was good in drawing. I started making doll houses in 2016 when I was in matric at Mukhwantheli Secondary School. The teachers encouraged me a lot to use my talent," he said.

Everyone is born with a talent and he believes that God blessed him with a talent to make doll houses. "Art, to me, is a calling from God. When I started making art, I realized that I'm good in it and this encouraged me to be serious about it. Art is very important in my life. Art is not difficult, because I like it," he said.

He also said that he used cardboard boxes, glue, paint, electrical cables and light bulbs. "These doll houses are very beautiful. I have a passion for designing houses," he added.

He wants to have an art gallery where he can create his doll houses and teach other people who are interested in art. "My dream is to own an art gallery if I get enough support from the local people in terms of funding," he said.

When asked how long it took him to complete a doll house, he said: "It takes three to four weeks to complete one. It needs time, focus and dedication. I strive to do quality art work to keep my clients happy."

He further encouraged young people to use the talents given to them by God. "Never doubt yourself. Everything is possible in life, but you must work hard," he said.
