Festival to honour late minister

Kincha Media, in partnership with the National Lotteries Commission, the Department of Arts and Culture, Vodacom, Limpopo Tourism, Limpopo Sport, Arts and Culture, will host the third edition of the Annual Collins Chabane Cultural Heritage Festival at Malamulele Stadium on Saturday, 25 May.

The founder of the festival, King Chauke, said that the festival aimed to celebrate the life of the late Minister of Public Service and Administration, Collins Chabane, and his contribution as a musician.

"Chabane was also a recording artist, having come from a musical background. He had a band, Movement, and played with big names such as Salif Keita and Hugh Masekela. He studied music theory while imprisoned on Robben Island and later co-founded Movement, a mbira-based band that recorded two albums," Chauke said.

"We want to uplift the local talent and stimulate economic transformation in rural areas. The festival is structured to bring social cohesion, build and empower upcoming businesses in the local region and at provincial level. We provide an opportunity to develop young and upcoming artists, while promoting our own tradition and heritage and preserving our culture."

Chauke said that the festival was an initiation of Kincha Media, a collaboration of four concepts (the Collins Chabane Heritage Festival, Collins Chabane Soccer Tournament, Collins Chabane Business and Skills Development and the Collins Chabane Talent Search) that were about the celebration of the colourful culture of the Limpopo people and a celebration and recognition of talented individuals who took pride in their heritage. "Art is used as a form of expression for many and culture is all about one’s identity, and when these two come together, magic happens. This festival will give recognition and opportunity to features such as football, music, dance, visual art and theatre," Chauke added.

The soccer tournament will be held at Saselamani Stadium on 26 May. Some of the artists who will perform are: Lady Zamar, Master KG, King Monada Joe Shirimani, Kanda Bongo Man, Benny Mayengani, Zola and Makhadzi.

The tickets are available at Shoprite, Checkers, and Usave. For more information, phone 082 628 8219.
