Music studio comes in handy

Up-and-coming artists in Khubvi, Makonde and other surrounding areas stand to benefit a lot from a newly opened music studio.

Self-taught guitar guru Mr Nkanukemi Zebulon Mbevhana has built a recording studio inside his house at Khubvi village. Even though the studio has not been officially opened, several artists from all over the country are busy recording their albums at the studio.

The 57-year old Mbevhana, who is a professional upholsterer, started playing the guitar in 1975 when he was only 13 years old.  "In those days we used to listen to the then Radio Venda, and one day as I was listening, I heard a song by a group called Ngarama Boys. I fell in love with the sound of their bass guitarist and the rest, as they say, is history," he said.

The following morning, he made himself a guitar from an old paraffin container and started learning how to play. All he wanted then, however, was to start his own band and play Rhumba music like the Ngarama Boys.

When asked why he had built the studio in his house, instead of building it in an industrial area, he said he wanted something closer to home where he did his upholstery. “It is close to the people and it is better and safer to have the studio under my roof where I can record and practice at any given time," he said.

Mbevhana added that apart from being busy recording his own debut album, several artists from around the country were busy recording their albums in the studio. "One of them is an international artist from Pretoria. People will be surprised when we release his latest album recorded from our studio. The quality of the sound here is unbelievable," he said.

He concluded that his favourite artist in South Africa was Mahlathini and the Mahottela Queens.
