Meet Dakalo “Libopie Charma Gal”

After discovering her music talent in 2007, Dakalo Mathaba has not looked back but continued to cement her presence in the music industry with tremendous single hits that have so far endeared her to the hearts of many music lovers.

She remembered clearly how she had come to realise that she was talented musically. “There were times when I started a song during morning assembly at the school and every teacher would be praising me after the assembly,” she said.

At Matangari Primary School and Lunwanngwe Secondary she met fellow pupils who would always request her to sing with them during breaktime. “They would crowd around me as I led them into a most powerful hymn or any other song, to the delight of those who passed by,” she said. “Today I am a singer in my own right because I didn’t dismiss my humble beginnings.”

“Music is everything to me. I sing about what is happening in the life of today, and preach the message of peace of mind, calmness and safety,” she said.

A resident at Matangari Matombotswuka village, Dakalo is known to thousands of her fans as Libopie Charma Gal.

“Music can also be a medium through which we are able to deliver empowerment messages to both victims and victimisers: victims need to know that they have to step out of abuse, while victimisers need to refrain from those elements of criminality,” she said.

At times she was crowded by the voices of discouragement in her music career, but she received words of motivation from Ndamulelo Maake. “He understands me and my music, which puts him in a position of giving me good advice,” she said. “He’s always reminding me to hold in high esteem the people that I'm singing for. His advice is sound.”

Libopie Charma Gal’s hits that made a name for her include, among others, Ni songo tsha vhilaela (Munna SASSA u hone), I Dani riyo vhonisa, Vula dzi ndila, Tonda swina Langa, and Vhafumakadzi.
