Dr Naledzani Rasila launches book

The head of communication at the Limpopo Department of Education, Dr Naledzani Rasila, recently launched his book, Pillars of Effective Government Communication Systems.

Rasila grew up in Mapate and passed Grade 12 at Mbilu Secondary School. He did a BA in communication at UNISA, a BA (hons) and MA in African languages at the University of Stellenbosch. He then did his PhD in Rural Development at Univen. His research in all senior degrees probed communication matters.

Rasila has been working for 20 years as government communicator and has trained many communicators on the best communication strategies. Some came in as trainee students to do internships and learnership programmes. While doing this he realized that a need existed for a book to support both students and other communicators. The main aim was to close communication knowledge gaps, particularly in government communication.

The 15-chapter book covers all fields of communication and gives practical guidelines on media handling, writing effective media statements, development of communication strategies and communication research. The book also has chapters on the implementation of monitoring and evaluation in communication and guides communicators on the proper use of social media.

The book is entirely based on communication work experience as Rasila has been a communication strategist in government for nearly 20 years and is currently heading monitoring and evaluation in the Limpopo Department of Education. The book is also based on his numerous presentations and workshops.

Rasila has published 18 papers in different journals internationally. He also played a significant role in the establishment of government communicators forums in provincial and local spheres of government in Limpopo.

A former chairperson of PRISA in Limpopo and a member of the Provincial Language Committee, Rasila is passionate about good writing and effective communication. For many years, Rasila served as communication strategist in the office of the Premier before joining the education department as head of communication and spokesperson.

This is not his first book. He previously authored a collection of poems, I was here, and I am here, Ndi khou vhudza vhone, Mulovha namusi na matshelo, and a short-story book, Mbilu I bvuda malofha. Rasila also wrote a drama, Hu do bebwa Tshianeo, for Phalaphala FM in the past. His love of writing and grooming others also drives him to him help upcoming academic researchers in constructing their proposals and theses.

Rasila is geared to write more communication papers and books championing rural development. His books are available, and details are also on his Facebook page, Dr Rasila-Strengthening capacity in leadership. He can be contacted telephonically at 083 241 0772 or by email at [email protected].
