Khodani's book sends a strong message of forgiveness

Khodani Melva Matloga wants to send a strong message out to people to remind them that, whatever wrong might have been done to them in their lives, whether by the hand of a stranger or a family member, they should always be prepared to forgive.

In her recently published novel, A Mother’s Betrayal, Khodani writes about forgiveness. In a nutshell, it tells the story of a mother and daughter who never see eye to eye. The daughter keeps questioning her mother's anger, and discovering the secrets and truth behind it all takes her a long time.

“In this book, the reader learns more about situations that could lead to desperate decisions that may cause serious damage to our loved ones,” Khodani said. “It helps us to understand that everything happens for a reason and we need to forgive, no matter how unfair the situation may seem. We do not have to live in our past but can move on and start afresh. It might have been a sour beginning between a mother and daughter, but it all ends with forgiveness.”

Khodani is a first-time published author and was not particularly motivated to write at first. She started writing as a pastime, but as she continued, she reached a point where she realised that, although her book was fictional, she was actually touching a topic that was relevant to many people.

She is known for writing wherever she goes. “Writing is in my blood; whenever boredom strikes, I find myself writing stories, and it gives me so much joy,” she said. “I don’t plan to write something; the words just suddenly come and then flow nonstop.”

A Mother’s Betrayal was published by NetBing Publishers and launched online on 6 March this year at The Next Big Thing studios. The book was viewed by more than 800 people, and judging by the comments posted, great interest in the book clearly exists.

“This book is for anyone,” she said. “It is about forgiveness; not only for the person who made them suffer, but for themselves too, so that they can find peace and move on without holding a grudge.”

A resident at Ha-Mulima Pfananani village, Khodani matriculated at St Brendan’s Catholic Secondary School and studied towards a Bachelor of Commerce in economics at the University of Venda, as well as a Bachelor of Commerce Honours in economics at the University of Limpopo.
