Security guard a shining music star

“I am very proud of my work as a security guard, but on the other hand I help people to solve some of their daily life problems through my music. I might be staying in a deep rural village, but life here is good because it is quiet, and it gives me enough time to compose my music without any disturbances.”

These are the words of Talifhani Munyai, the rising star of Tshivenda traditional music who hails from the deep rural village of Mbodi Tsha Fhasi in the Niani area.

Because he did not have any musical instruments then, Munyai used to walk more than 20 kilometres from his village to Sanari just to play a guitar belonging to his cousin, Colbert Nndwambi. But all these sacrifices were not in vain as today, Munyai is quickly making a name for himself on the Tshivenda traditional music scene.

Because of his love of music, Munyai made his first guitar with an old oil tin and rubber bands. “My uncle, Gilbert Mukwevho, realized that I liked music and he bought me an acoustic guitar. I was also very active in school and church choirs, and everyone spoke of my beautiful voice. That ignited the musical spark in me and, since then, I have never looked back.”

Munyai, who drew inspiration from Tshivenda musical gurus such as Alpheus Ramavhea and Adziambei Band, has just released his debut single track, titled Vhutshivha, which is making waves in music circles.

“I wanted to test the market with my single track and the response is overwhelming. It is also fulfilling to note that radio stations are playing the song almost on a daily basis. This has given me enough courage to work on a full album that will be released in the near future. Those who want my single song can contact me directly on 063 036 7407 or on Facebook (Talifhani Munyai),” said Munyai.
