Gospel Joe needs your vote to realise his dream

A gifted young artist from Musina, Jonathan Chinyama, better known as Gospel Joe, has made it to the Top 25 in the MTN Joyous Celebration Talent Search 2022-2023 – a multi-award-winning gospel project that showcases South Africa’s dynamic young singers and musicians.

This is indeed a huge achievement for one of Vhembe’s own, taking into consideration that more than 8 000 participants from across the country entered the competition. In previous years, auditions were conducted in person, but since the start of the Covid pandemic, this has been done digitally. Contestants had to submit a two-minute video recording of their own rendition of an exclusive track from the MTN Joyous Celebration album. From these videos, the judges chose the best ones.

The winner of the main prize will become the next MTN Joyous Celebration member, while the Top 10 shortlisted candidates stand a chance to win a Y’ello Dream to the value of R10 000.

The Top 25 were announced on 4 February this year. The Top 10 will be announced on Sunday, 28 February, and the main winner on 17 April this year.

However, for Gospel Joe to win the competition and realise his musical dreams, he needs the public to vote for him.

He told Limpopo Mirror that his dream had always been to become a member of the MTN Joyous Celebration gospel group. “I saw an advert on social media at the end of last year and did not waste any time. I was happy to be among the 25 best contestants across South Africa and I believe that it is now my time to scoop the first prize. My being a member of the MTN Joyous Celebration group will not only uplift the people of Musina, but I will also be representing my province of Limpopo while showing the whole world that we are also among the best,” he said proudly.

Born on 8 October 1990, Gospel Joe gained prominence through his track Ria tenda and a video clip of a hymn song he made, called A thi ngi iwe Yeso, which went viral on social media. He started his music career at the age of 15 when he joined the praise and worship team at the local United Apostolic Faith Church. He then joined the choir at Musina High School, where he became the lead singer and a conductor. He later joined the Armed for Harvest gospel choir, where he rubbed shoulders with seasoned musicians such as Walter Mudzunga, Phatu Dzivhani, Lufuno Buda and Rofhiwa Manyaga. His songs continue to receive fair airplay on both local and national radio stations.

To vote for Gospel Joe, SMS “MTN Joyous 8” to 39720 or dial *120*45690#. No limit is placed on voting and the public can vote as many times as they wish.
