Social-media platforms come in handy for Reggae artists and fans

Reggae artists and supporters now have a very useful platform to share their music and contribute to this ever-growing, age-old genre, thanks to the creativity of Mutali Tshifura, better known as Rasta Movement.

Tshifura has created several social-media channels under the Limpopo Reggae Consult banner, which allows reggae artists and fans to interact with ease. Limpopo Reggae Consult now has a Facebook page, WhatsApp group and YouTube channel specifically designed for reggae lovers.

“As a reggae artist myself, I realised that there was no platform for us to interact among ourselves to promote our music. The fans also did not have anywhere to rub shoulders with their favourite artists to discuss issues related to music promotion,” says Tshifura.

He says that, most of the time, funds are needed to promote music and festivals, which many of the upcoming artists do not have. “Now that these platforms are available on social media, they can use it to promote their music. If artists have new projects, upcoming gigs or events, they can merely share them on these platforms without paying a cent. That also goes for the supporters who want to interact with the artists.”

One of the local upcoming reggae artists who make use of the Limpopo Reggae Consult platforms is Thendo Mukwevho. “When I was about to release my latest album, I shared it on the Reggae Consult Facebook page and WhatsApp group and the response was overwhelming. Some artists and music lovers even booked my CDs before the music was released,” he said. “I urge other reggae artists and music lovers who have not joined yet to come on board because this will help them to network their music. What is great about it is that we have presenters and music compilers from various radio stations who also participate on these platforms. This in turn helps them to pick up on new music content and be able to play them on their radio stations,” he says.
