While many people are asleep between midnight and 03:00 in the morning, Musina FM’s prolific radio presenter, Mmbangiseni Dzakani, is at the studio, sharp and wide awake behind the microphone, presenting The Family Talk Show to his late-night listeners.

The show tackles social issues among adults, and Mmbangiseni is at his post every night from Monday to Friday.

Dzakani also presents the Divhavhupo programme every Saturday morning between 09:00 and 11:00, where listeners are informed about local tourist attractions, villages and sacred sites, and on Sunday evenings between 19:00 and 21:00 he presents the Zwa Hashu show, which focuses on cultural matters.

This is his routine seven days a week. Dzakani eats, sleeps, and breathes radio every day of his life, and he cannot be happier!

This ambitious radio DJ, who joined Musina FM in 2014, is one of the border-town community radio station’s most experienced and long-serving presenters. Born and bred at Ha-Makuya Khavhambe village, Dzakani recalled how his position at Musina FM came about. “I was travelling in a taxi when I heard that Musina FM was looking for a producer. I went to the radio station that same day and approached the station manager, who invited me for an interview the following day. The interview went well, and I was immediately appointed. I worked as a producer for only two weeks before I was given more responsibilities as a presenter.”

Asked what keeps him going seven days a week, non-stop, Dzakani said: “Radio is my life, and nothing can separate me from the airwaves. I love my work wholeheartedly, and I feel fulfilled when I am behind the microphone. That is the secret to success - you have to enjoy and love what you do. It is the most important thing in life. If you do, success will follow.”

Dzakani has qualifications in basic ambulance assistance, social auxiliary and computer literacy, and advises aspiring young radio presenters to value education. “If something happens to my radio career, I can still go out and hunt for a job with ease because I have qualifications.”
