Pastor Pfunzo wears many different hats

As a young boy, Pfunzo Mudau used to imitate other musicians, using an empty cold drink bottle as microphone. Never in his wildest dreams did he think that this innocent day-dreaming and play-pretending to be a singer would one day end up becoming a reality.

Mudau, who was born into a Christian family in Mulima village outside Louis Trichardt, is a pastor at the United in Christ Christian Church today but also preaches the Word of God through music. Over the past seven years, this singing pastor, known as Minister Pfunzo, has released eight singles, which he is now busy compiling into a full album. The album, titled How Wonderful is Your Name, will be released at the end of May.

This multi-talented man wears many hats besides preaching, singing, composing, and producing music. He is also a sports administrator, netball player and coach, and drama facilitator. He says that, despite his being a busy man, music remains one of his greatest loves and he enjoys every moment behinds the microphone.

His first song, I can do all things through Christ, which was released in 2015, set his song-writing skills in motion. “When I wrote this song, I wanted to relay a message of hope to everyone out there that everything is possible through Jesus Christ.” Other songs followed, including Shumani ni sa neti, Ndi renda vhone, My God is good, Thank you, Jesus and Ndi ya vha funa Yesu.

In 2021, he won the Best Male Gospel Award at the Mogale Awards. He has in the past worked with seasoned artists such as Rofhiwa Manyaga, Pretty Khoza, Taki Ndou, Minister Lombard Matshinge, and Psalmist, Khathu Khedzi, among many others.

Mudau is currently working on a script for the movie Vhutshilo Phanda, which will start shooting in September this year.

Asked how he managed to shuffle between all these roles, he replied: “The most important thing is to love what you do. It is also important to ask God for wisdom, so that you can execute all your responsibilities with ease. Above all, time management is pillar to everything you do if you want to be successful.”
