Local author Fhatuwani Mudzunga has published a Tshivenda novel titled Tshiitamune atshivhavhi. Hailing from Manavhela village in Vuwani, Mudzunga holds a diploma in criminal justice and is currently a fourth-year bachelor of education student at Unisa.
“I used to write short stories, and my friends were always impressed with my writing ability. I only took it seriously when I began writing Vholima dzunde Vhakana Mishonga nwaha wa in 2022. I wanted to share my experiences and the message that whatever difficult situation we face in life eventually comes to an end,” he said.
Mudzunga encourages young people to use their talents to inspire their communities. “It’s important to use your skills while you’re still young, as that could lay the foundation for your future. My talent is innate, but my success is due to hard work and a positive attitude. I want to show that success doesn’t depend on coming from a disadvantaged rural area, but on using the limited resources at your disposal effectively.”
He emphasised that he uses pure Tshivenda in his writing to help keep the language alive. “Writers have the unique ability to revive and preserve their languages through their work,” he added.
