Drummer King Rue takes Amapiano and Afro-Tech by storm

Murunwa Rambau, known as King Rue, is a multitalented female drummer making a name for herself in the entertainment industry. At just 23 years of age, the Thohoyandou-born artist plays Amapiano and 3-step Afro-tech music. She started drumming at the age of 15 and officially entered the Amapiano scene in 2022.

Rue’s passion for drumming began early, but it was in 2022 that she fully embraced the music industry. She worked with several DJs to form duos, which helped her build her stage presence and brand. This experience gave her the independence and flexibility needed to succeed in the industry.

In 2023, King Rue became the face of Made in Venda94, a popular clothing brand in Vhembe, and was named an ambassador for Isabella Garcia, an international skincare brand. Rue is also passionate about women’s empowerment and uses her achievements to inspire other women. She is actively planning future collaborations with fellow female creatives and industry leaders.

In addition to her music career, Rue holds a degree in public administration and development from the University of Venda, as well as in occupational health and safety from IQ Academy. She is a multitalented musician, a dedicated mother, and a strong advocate for women’s rights.

“As a mother, I balance my music career with raising a family, while promoting self-care, empowerment, and equality for all women,” Rue said. “My commitment to my daughter and my music shows strength and perseverance, despite society’s expectations. I am passionate about women's rights and aim to create a world where women are heard and can thrive.”

Rue credits artists such as Black Motion and Uncle Waffles as her inspiration. "Being a female drummer has been an amazing journey. I aim to inspire other women, and through my work, I believe I’ve done that. It has allowed me to achieve a lot at a young age. I love music and entertainment, and drumming lets me do both," she shared.

One of her biggest challenges has been her experience in duos that did not work out. “I’ve been in three duos, and none of them lasted. This taught me to believe in myself more, and I decided to go solo. It’s been an amazing journey ever since,” she added.
