“Best overall performer English home language, Lineo Khabane. Best overall performer Afrikaans additional language, Lineo Khabane. Best overall performer Social Sciences, Lineo Khabane. Best overall performer Natural Sciences, Lineo Khabane. Best overall performer Creative Arts, Lineo Khabane. Best overall performer Life Orientation, Lineo Khabane. Best overall performer Mathematics, Lineo Khabane.”

This is how Lineo Khabane (13), a Grade 7 learner at Gateway Primary School, stole the show during the school’s excellence awards ceremony that took place at the Musina show grounds last Thursday.

After the ceremony, Lineo said she was not surprised by her scooping up the seven awards for the top learner at the school. “I expected it to happen because I worked very hard throughout the year. My preparations and hard work started during the first day when the schools opened in January. My best friends are my books, and I make sure that I give myself enough time to study. I feel very sad when one of my classmates performs better than me, and I had to make sure that I do my best to be on top. I will definitely keep the same pace when I go to high school next year.”

Lineo’s father, Paulos was over the moon by his daughter’s achievement. “I’m very proud of her because she is a true example of what an obedient child is all about. I always give her support to make sure that she reads her books in a conducive environment.”

School principal Itani Masithulela said he was very proud of Lineo and all the learners who had received awards during the ceremony. “They have worked hard for these awards and it was important for us to appreciate their hard work. We also thank the parents, teachers, school governing body and our stakeholders who continue to work with us in making this school one of the best in the province. We will continue to give the best education to prepare these children who are the future leaders of our country.”

Ms Josephine Pieters from De Beers Venetia Mine congratulated all the award recipients and added that the mine would continue to support education in its labour-sending areas.
