Tshivhase Royal Family mourns the death of Zulu king

The Tshivhase Royal Council are mourning the death of the Zulu king. King Goodwill Zwelithini ka Bhekuzulu, the king of the Zulu tribe, died last Friday at the age of 72.

The council’s spokesperson, Musanda Vho-Luvhaivhai Tshivhase, said that they had interacted with the Zulu king on numerous occasions. He described King Zwelithini as a humble man.

“Death has stolen our polite, energetic, dedicated, social and open-minded leader. We worked with him very closely to revive and preserve our heritage,” he said. Tshivhase said that the relationship between the Tshivhase family and the Zulu king had started in 2006 when he was officially invited to grace the annual Reed Dance at Enyokeni in Nongoma. “On many occasions we shared the stage during (functions of) the African Cultural Music and Dance Association (ACUMDA).”

The Tshivhase Dynasty, led by Mailausumbwa Midiyavhathu Prince Kennedy Tshivhase was also one of the kingdoms officially invited to open royal houses at the KeDitselana Multi-Cultural Village in Vosloorus, together with King Goodwill Zwelithini.

In July 2014, Musanda Vho-Luvhaivhai Tshivhase was again officially invited to grace King Zwelithini's traditional wedding in Ulundi when he married his sixth wife, queen Mafu. Tshivhase was accompanied by Tshikona traditional dancers from Gauteng.

“It was a historic day where many people from Venda, who were working as educators in Ulundi, came forward after the Tshikona was performed,” he said. “It is through this close relationship with the Zulu kingdom that we feel so devastated by the passing on of the Zulu King, His Majesty King Goodwill Zwelithini.”
