Former Musina Municipality ANC councillor and political activist Hlaulani Mlati (42) was laid to rest at Musina last week.

Mlati's sudden death a shock

“No one can confidently say that he will still be living tomorrow,” said the ancient Greek tragedian and scholar, Euripides. Although he said these words many centuries ago, the statement is still relevant today as the world keeps on losing valuable community members daily. The death of a prolific former ANC PR councillor and political activist in Musina early last week after a short illness has sent shockwaves through the people of Musina.

Hlaulani Shepherd Mlati’s death can be compared to the burning or destruction of a well-equipped library that houses important knowledge that the community still need in their daily lives. He was laid to rest at Musina last Friday. The funeral was preceded by a memorial service that took place at the New Nancefield Community Hall a day before.

Mlati (42) displayed leadership skills at a very young age, cutting his political teeth by becoming the president of the student representative council at Musina High School. He was also involved and took leadership positions in the ANC Youth League, Musina Youth Council and the Young Communist League. He served these organisations at local, district and provincial levels.

A voice of the voiceless, he was part of the Musina Civic Association and Musina Development Forum. He was deployed by the ANC to serve as PR councillor in Musina Local Municipality in 2009. He also served as chairperson of Messina Hospital on more than one occasion.

In a statement, ANC Vhembe Regional Secretary Anderson Mudunungu said the passing of Mlati was a huge loss to the family and the entire community of Vhembe. “Comrade Mlati was a versatile all-rounder who executed his task with utmost dedication. He mentored and nurtured a lot of young people who are today leading various structures in society and government. We send our heartfelt condolences to the Mlati family, fellow comrades, friends and colleagues.”

Musina Mayor Mihloti Muhlope was equally shocked by Mlati’s passing. She said: “Mlati was a hardworking comrade who served local people with diligence until his last day on earth. He passed on at a time when we needed his political intelligence and experience to sustain a better life for all. We will always cherish his love for the community and the impact he made to the people of Musina. May his soul rest in peace.”
