Revenge killing?

The body of a young man was found along a street in Tshakhuma on Sunday (12 September). The man had gaping wounds to the head, suggesting that he had been stabbed with a sharp object before he died. The man accused of his murder is in custody.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, an argument allegedly ensued between the victim, Rofhiwa Managa (28), and the suspect, Innocent Makondelele (25), after which Managa was stabbed several times in the head.

Makondelele handed himself over to the police and told them that he had taken revenge on Managa for killing his older brother, Tshililo Makondelele, in September last year at a local tavern. Managa had been arrested for murder and was out on bail at the time of his death.

Mojapelo warned the community against taking the law into their own hands. “We have opened a murder case,” he said. Makondelele appeared in the Vuwani Magistrate’s Court on 14 September, where the case was postponed to 29 October for further investigation. He will remain in custody.

Managa’s death caused a great stir among the community, and after news of the discovery of his body had spread, a huge crowd gathered at the scene where he was found. A member of the community, who asked to remain anonymous, said that they were tired of the crime in the area. “So many other crimes have been committed in this area, and the only way to stop this is to teach these criminals a lesson they will never forget,” he said.

The father of the deceased, Mr Ronald Managa, said he had heard that a man was lying dead in the street. He rushed to the scene like everyone else and was shocked to find that the deceased was his son. “Our hearts are broken,” he said. “The man responsible for my son’s death will pay for it one of these days. God will answer me,” he said.

Managa will be buried on Friday, 17 September, at Tshakhuma. The service starts at 06:00.
