The well-known soccer administrator and principal of Swobani High, Samuel “Scara” Tshigomana, obtained his PhD in Public and Development Administration at the University of Venda (Univen) on 19 November.

Tshigomana hails from the rural village of Muraleni in the Sinthumule area. He started his education at Mugororwane Primary School and finished matric at Sinthumule High. He enrolled for a teacher’s diploma at the Venda College of Education and later also received an honours degree in education from Unisa, a diploma in sports at Unisa, a master’s degree in public development management at Wits, and now he graduated with a PhD in public and development administration at Univen.

Tshigomana is chairperson of Vhembe Schools Sport, a member of the Makhado Football Association and the Safa Vhembe Stream E referee selector.

He expressed his appreciation to his family for their continued support throughout his achievements. “Growing up in a disadvantaged family background was not easy, but I am happy that I made it.” He said that these achievements meant a lot to him, and he hoped that they would encourage young people to focus seriously on their studies.

“I did not do this for name or fame. My heart bleeds for the future of the young generation, and I must demonstrate to them that nothing is more important than education. I also want to show everyone that it is possible to achieve educational dreams, even when one is employed.”

He plans to further his studies next year. “I wish I was still young, so that I could fully utilise the studying opportunities, but I thank God that I have at least managed to fulfil part of my dream. I will keep on studying, until I lose my eyesight.”

Tshigomana said that reading broadened his mind, and he constantly kept himself busy reading books. “People should know that we do not read books for salary increments, but to acquire more knowledge and to become well informed.”

He has a strong message to other elders who think that old age is a stumbling block to further studies. “As elders, we are capable of making a contribution to the development of education in our country. We have to compete against our youths in the class because age is against us. I call upon all elders, including pensioners, to sit down with their books to improve their life skills for the benefit of our communities.”
