Almost half a million jobs for EPWP

More than 475 000 EPWP jobs are expected to be created over a period of five years, said Mr Seaparo Sekoati MEC for the Treasury in Limpopo.

He recently announced this at the launch of the fourth phase of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) at the Louis Trichardt Show Ground.

According to Sekoati, the EPWP is part of the government’s multi-faceted approach of dealing with inherited problems of inequality, lack of jobs and poverty and has a great potential to transform the lives of the poor and vulnerable. The programme is a nationwide entity that draws significant numbers of unemployed people into productive work, said Sekoati.

From 2003, when the EPWP was launched by former president Thabo Mbeki, the programme has been implemented in roads and fire-fighting departments. According to Sekoati, the programme will now be extended to four sectors, infrastructure, environmental and culture, social and non-state. “We are going to monitor running of the programme in these sectors to ensure the challenges and risks identified in the previous phases are addressed,” he added.

As part of implementation in these sectors, the government will continue to focus more on the rehabilitation and maintenance of aging road infrastructure, especially those that connect the major economic towns of the province. According to the MEC the programme also provides an opportunity for skilling and acquiring experience through on-the-job training.
