Manamela impressed with Univen and Vhembe's readiness

The Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Buti Manamela, said that he was impressed with the state of readiness of the University of Venda (Univen) and Vhembe TVET College after his visit to the two campuses two weeks ago.

Manamela, who was accompanied by the MEC for Health, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, and Vhembe District Municipality Mayor Dowelani Nenguda, was on a visit to institutions of higher learning to assess and monitor the state of readiness ahead of their welcoming another group of students on their campuses.

“We were impressed with the state of readiness at Univen and Vhembe TVET College as we visited and had a fact-finding mission ahead the coming of students. We hope and are optimistic that learning and teaching will go smoothly as the university and college management were prepared,” said Manamela.

Together with Dr Ramathuba, he visited campus clinics, student residences, the life sciences section at Univen, among others, and the Vhembe TVET College’s plant for clothing production.

Manamela and Ramathuba were screened for the coronavirus, sanitised, and wore masks by way of adhering to the Covid-19 pandemic prevention regulations.

The spokesperson for Univen, Dr Takalani Dzaga, said they were expecting to welcome a cohort of about 33% of students back to the campus from Monday, 22 June, mostly those in their final year and doing practical work. "We also have tight security when all people, including students and employees, are being screened for the coronavirus before they enter the campus. Students have to observe social distancing when attending lectures and students with disabilities will also receive preference during this time,” said Dzaga.

The manager of Vhembe TVET College's clothing production plant, Mr Rudzani Makheda, said he was happy that the deputy minister himself had visited the college for the fact-finding mission about its state of readiness. Makheda said they also produced their own masks and sanitisers and they always encouraged adherence and compliance among students, employees, and visitors to the college.

Makheda also told Manamela that the centre needed some funds to proceed with some projects to fight the scourge of the coronavirus pandemic.
