Emotional funeral for young student killed in crash

A young student who was killed when a motor rammed into seven students of the Makwarela Campus of the Vhembe TVET College was laid to rest during an emotional funeral at Nguda village’s graveyard on Saturday.

Mr Manuel Maleba (22), an N5 marketing student at Vhembe TVET College, was killed instantly when the driver of the car lost control and it went straight into students who were queuing for registration on their first day of learning and teaching at the college last Monday.

Six students knocked down during the accident were reported to have been rushed to the nearby hospital for treatment and are said to have been discharged.

Representing the family, Ms Rosinah Gumani said that although they had buried their young man in a dignified way, life would never be the same when Manuel was no longer living and staying with them

“He was about to complete his N6 diploma in December this year, and the family was still hoping that he would get a good job after completing his studies and help his struggling family.”

The spokesperson for Vhembe TVET College, Mr Bongi Nkosi Dladlama, said the circumstances that had made the Malebo family lose one of its promising members, who was serious about education, were unfortunate. He added, however, that the college kept contact with the family and had opened the doors of assistance to the family with anything they might need.

Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the police in Thohoyandou were still investigating a case of culpable homicide after the death of Mr Maleba. He said the 29-year-old driver was facing a charge of culpable homicide and would appear in court very soon.
