PSL to confirm playoff venues

The Premier Soccer League will confirm the venues for the promotional playoff matches next Monday.

According to a statement from the league, the delay to confirm the venues was influenced by the fact that all the Premier Division teams will play their last league matches for the current season tomorrow afternoon (Saturday).

The team that will join the National First Division teams, Black Leopards and Stellenbosch FC, in the playoffs will be known after tomorrow’s matches. The Premier Division team that will finish the league programme in the 15th position will join Black Leopards and Stellenbosch FC in the playoffs, while the last team on the log will be relegated to the National First Division.

Five teams, Baroka FC, Highlandspark FC, Free State Stars, Chippa United and Bloemfontein Celtic, are fighting for survival. Baroka are languishing at the bottom of the log with 25 points, while Highlandspark have 26 points in their league account. Free State Stars and Chippa United are tied with 27 points each and Bloemfontein Celtic has 28.

Highlandspark will have a mountain to climb tomorrow. They will host Mamelodi Sundowns at the Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa. Sundowns must win the match to wrap up their league programme in the second position on the log. Baroka will fly to Cape Town where they will meet Ajax Cape Town at the Cape Town Stadium.

Bloemfontein Celtic need a draw in their match against Maritzburg United to escape the relegation axe. Free State Stars will host Chippa United at the Goble Park Stadium in Bethlehem.

The first promotional playoff match will be played next Wednesday, May 31. Stellenbosch FC will host the team from the Premier Division in the opening fixture.
