Teams to battle for Mayoral Cup

Teams that are playing under the auspices of the Safa Vhembe MMK Administrators and Women’s league will battle it out for honours in the Vhembe Mayoral Cup this coming week.

On Sunday, teams will meet at the Lesley Manyathela Stadium in Musina and the Malamulele Stadium. The winners will play at Makhuvha Stadium on Wednesday.

The toss and launch was held last Wednesday at the Mphephu Resort. According to the organiser of the tournament, 16 men’s teams and eight ladies’ teams will battle it out this year.

The chairperson of Safa Vhembe, Mr Mulimisi Muneri, expressed his appreciation towards the sponsors. He stated that he was convinced that the tournament would produce stars.

Muneri pointed out that sport was the most effective way to draw the youth away from gangsterism, drugs and alcohol abuse. “The main idea behind the staging of the tournament was to identify talent,” he said.

He appealed to the people to refrain from assaulting match officials. He also reiterated the fact that it was bad for the teams to win matches through the bribing of officials.

This year’s champion in the men’s division will take home R30 000, a soccer kit, a floating trophy and gold medals. The runners-up will receive R20 000 and silver medals. The third-placed team will receive R15 000 and the fourth-placed team R10 000. The teams that end up in the quarterfinals will get R5 000 each and the eight teams booted out in the first matches will get R2 000 each.

In the ladies’ division, the champions will go home with R10 000, a soccer kit, gold medals and a floating trophy. The runners-up will collect R5 000, silver medals and a soccer kit, and the third-placed team R3 000, bronze medals and a soccer kit. The team in fourth position will get R2 000 and the last four teams will receive R500 each.
