Huge interest in Musina's winter games

More than 100 teams from various sporting codes in all 12 wards registered for the Musina Municipality’s 2018 Annual Mayoral Winter Games Tournament. This was said by Musina mayor, Cllr Mihloti Muhlope when she officially opened the 20th edition of the week-long tournament at Lesley Manyathela Stadium on Monday.

The municipality has set aside R200 000 to organize this year’s tournament. The mayor will hand over prizes which include cash, trophies and medals to the winning teams this weekend.

Muhlope said one of the objectives of the tournament is to keep the youth off the streets during winter school vacations. She said she is encouraged when seeing the number of teams participating in this year’s tournament.

Muhlope said no one can dispute the fact that Musina is the home of sports. “Through our annual winter games and Two Countries Marathon, we have discovered and nurtured sports and athletics personalities who were able to compete on the national and international spheres.”

She added that they want to produce more stars like the late Lesley Manyathela, who made a name for himself in both Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana.

“As Musina Municipality, we pride ourselves by producing Isaac Dzamuluma Mbedzi, the SABC 2010 newcomer sports journalist of the year. Mbedzi is a multiple-award winning sport commentator who specialize in soccer, cricket, boxing and rugby.”

She added that Musina has sports stars who are continuously putting the municipality on the map. “We have Khomotso Masianuga, the only netball player from Musina and Vhembe District who since 2003, plays for the Limpopo Baobabs. This is the netball team that play in the Brutal Fruit Premier League and that compete with ten other teams across South Africa. We also have Elton Kapinga, Khuliso Sailor Mudau and Thembisani Nevhulamba who play for Black Leopards and Ndivhuwo Ravhuhali of Polokwane City.”
