Baroka silence Pirates in the finals

The Limpopo-based Baroka FC were crowned as the new champions of the prestigious Telkom Cup after beating Orlando Pirates 3-2 on penalties in the final at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday evening.

This was the first trophy won by Bakgaga ba ga Mphahlele, as the team are affectionately known.

Pirates started at a fast pace, with their midfielders on fire. Vincent Pule of Pirates forced his way through the defence of Baroka and passed to Ananias Gerhardt, whose attempt missed the target by inches.

Baroka then took the game to Pirates. They found their first goal through Jerondre Dickens, who blasted in a rocket from the edge of the box. Their midfielders continued to distribute some telling passes from the middle of the park in their search for more goals.

They were denied several sure goals by the Pirates’ acrobatic keeper, Siyabonga Mpotshane. Pirates eventually found the equaliser. Justine Shonga caught the Baroka keeper, Elvis Chipezeze, napping and beat him with a beautiful shot.

Nyasha Munetsi of Orlando Pirates was given his marching orders after a second bookable offence.

Baroka started the second half with confidence and attacked with pace, but their final delivery let them down. Pirates regrouped and gave their opponents not a moment to breathe.

Tebogo Sodi of Baroka was brought down illegally by keeper Siyabonga Mpotshane and the referee pointed to the white spot in extra time. Their skipper, Mduduzi Mdantsane scored, but late in the match, Pirates equalized through Thembinkosi Lorch, who headed home.

With the victory Baroka received R4 milllion.
