Elderly team needs help

A newly formed team, Ndamulelo Gogobole Elderly soccer team, needs help from Good Samaritans.

The team needs equipment such as soccer kits, soccer boots and balls. The captain, Ms Jenifer Matshinga, said that they invited the businesspeople to come forward, so that they could see what they were doing. “We would like to see them assisting us when we play our matches next year with other teams. Without their help, we would not be able to run our team,” she said.

She said the team was established with the aim of helping them to relieve stress and keep them healthy. "Exercise is very important for the elders, who spend most of their time sitting down, not doing anything," she said.

The coach, Mr Samuel Ramusheu, said the old women were a true example of women empowerment because they were displaying that there was no longer a sporting code for a certain gender.

"You are not only winding up time by playing soccer. You are keeping your bodies healthy and you must remember that a healthy body has a healthy mind. These elders in their golden years are shunning the stigma that goes with old age. Let’s do away with the idea that elders are supposed to sit at home, doing nothing until sunset. Soccer was previously for young men, because it needed someone with strength and power. We are very proud of these old ladies, because they have shown everyone that nothing is impossible."

According to Gogo Dorah Mahuwas, exercise is very important for them. “We love soccer and that is why we kept on playing, even though we didn’t have proper clothing.” Businesspeople or any person who wants to help can call 072 021 1087 or 072 411 9303.
