Leopards and Park on the warpath

After kissing goodbye to the Nedbank Cup KO competition, following their 3-4 loss to Bidvest Wits at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Monday evening, Black Leopards are gearing up for an all-important Absa Premiership League match against Highlands Park at the same venue on Sunday afternoon.

The fact that Leopards and Highlands Park have one common goal is reason enough for the local soccer fanatics to expect to watch a thriller.

Both Lidoda Duvha and Highlands Park, or The Lions of the North as they are affectionately called, are aiming to finish their league programme within the top-eight bracket on the log standings. Highlands Park are currently lying in the ninth spot with 25 points, while the Thohoyandou side is in the 12th spot with 20 points.

The team’s head coaches, Mr Owen da Gama (Highlands Park) and Mr Dylan Kerr (Leopards), stated that finishing their league programmes within the top eight in their debut season in the Absa Premiership would be a great achievement for them as coaches and the teams.

Leopards and Highlands Park played to a 2-2 draw in their first-round league match at the Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa about seven months ago.

Peter Shalulile and Mothobi Mvala are some of the players the Leopards’ defenders must keep an eye on from the onset. The Leopards’ midfielder, Tswarelo Bereng, will be available for selection on Sunday after watching the team’s previous games from the grandstand because of injury. The only Leopards player who will miss Sunday’s match is Khuliso Mudau. He is still under suspension after seeing red in their game against Bloemfontein Celtic three weeks ago.

The other Premiership fixtures for the weekend are: Bloemfontein Celtics vs Free State Stars; Chippa United vs Lamontville Golden Arrows; Polokwane City vs Kaizer Chiefs; Cape Town City vs Maritzburg United; Bidvest Wits vs Mamelodi Sundowns; Orlando Pirates vs Amazulu and SuperSport United vs Baroka.
