Soccer extravaganza at Thohoyandou

The Thohoyandou Stadium will be a hive of activity this weekend. That is where the much-awaited opening festival for the Multichoice Diski Shield competition will be staged.

The 16 Multichoice Diski Challenge League teams are grouped into four groups. Group A is made up of Bidvest Wits, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Highlands Park. The teams that comprise group B are: Bloemfontein Celtics, Cape Town City, Free State Stars and Supersport United.

The hosts, Black Leopards, belong to group C. The Thohoyandou side are grouped with Mamelodi Sundowns and the other Limpopo-based sides, Polokwane City and Baroka FC. Amazulu FC, Chippa United, Lamontville Golden Arrows and Maritzburg United will compete within group D.

The festival will take the league shape in the first round and the team with the highest number of points at the end of the group stages will progress to the semi-finals. Two matches will be played at the Thohoyandou Stadium tomorrow. Baroka FC will take on their neighbors, Polokwane City, in the opening match, which is scheduled to start at 10:00. Bidvest Wits and Orlando Pirates will wrap up the day’s programme in what promises to be a thriller.

The same number of matches will be played on Sunday. Black Leopards will entertain Mamelodi Sundowns in the opening fixture, which is scheduled to kick-off at 10:00. Highlands Park and Kaizer Chiefs will follow suit soon afterwards.

The champions will be presented with a cheque to the value of R150 000. The runners-up will take home cash amounting to R75 000, while a cash prize to the tune of R25 000 is awaiting the team that will finish in the third spot.

According to a statement from the Premier Soccer League, free admission tickets to the stadium are available at all local Spar outlets.
