Golfers come out swinging for the disabled

The IsAbility Sports Club’s annual golf day on Saturday, 12 June, this year drew a full field of 23 four-ball teams.

The winning four-ball team with 107 points was the Osglo team, represented by Christian Mocke, Gerrit Venter, Pieter Venter and Anrich Leeb.  Runners-up with 104 points were the Stroebel team, represented by Abdully Omar, Riaz Ismael, Dane Rooi and Hulisani Dabishi, and in third place with 101 points was the Speed Cash Loans team represented by Kotie Jacobs, Vic Grobler, Eben Moller and Glen McLeod.

The IsAbility Sport Club said afterwards that they were extremely grateful to the Soutpansberg Golf Club, including club captain Ryno Gerber, Maré van der Merwe, and the staff of the club, for making the IsAbility Golf Day possible. “We also extend our heartfelt thanks to all the golfers who participated with such great spirit, the caddies, our generous sponsors (listed at the end of the article) and all our volunteers, caterers and camera lady who gave up their Saturday for the cause of raising funds for those in our communities who are mobility, visually or hearing impaired,” said Sandy James of the IsAbility Sports Club.

James also thanked Pastor Jan Venter and members of his Guardian Angels group from Louis Trichardt High School, who made sure that the day was unique by enlisting the forces of Captain Hook and his pirates at the 15^th hole. “Because the golfing field was so full, some of the golfers who played the 15^th hole later in the day did not meet up with Captain Hook because the pirates had another urgent assignment on the wild seas. But we have been informed that Captain Hook has promised to be back again at the next IsAbility golf day and that he and his gang have an appointment with those who enjoy some excitement and are willing to take some risks,” said James. One of the prizes awarded on the day was the Captain Hook prize, which went to André Schoeman, who was willing to remove his prosthetic leg for his drive on the 15^th hole.

The club said they also appreciated the assistance of Phillip Potgieter who, like a seasoned auctioneer, did a super job of auctioning off a wildlife canvas from Painted Horse Fine Art Prints. The raffle draw revealed the winner of the getaway weekend at Crystal Springs as Marina Msipa. “All in all, we felt blessed to see so much enthusiasm amongst all the players and volunteers and it is heart-warming to know that when people unite as a team with a meaningful vision, so much can be achieved - for this we give all the glory to the Lord,” said James. She added that the success of the golf day had ensured that they could continue making a difference in the lives of the disabled in the province and creating awareness of opportunities for those living with disabilities (or rather, extraordinary abilities).
