Maelula United Brothers lift the Zwavhudi trophy

Maelula United Brothers were crowned as the champions of the Zwavhudi Animal Feeds Winter Youth Tournament at the Thohoyandou Stadium last Saturday. They managed to beat Bungeni Young Tigers 2-0 in the final.

United Brothers were presented with a cheque to the value of R40 000, two sets of soccer kit, gold medals, four soccer balls and a floating trophy during a ceremony held at the stadium shortly after the final whistle. United Brothers started off a successful weekend by beating Masakona Young Tigers 1-0 in their semi-final match that was played at the same venue earlier that day.

The runners-up, Bungeni Young Tigers, went home with R20 000, silver medals, four soccer ball and two sets of soccer kit. The third-placed side, Masakona Young Tigers, were presented with R10 000, bronze medals, four soccer balls and two sets of soccer kit during the ceremony.

Masakona Young Tigers beat Matanda Rockers 2-0 in their losers’ final match, which was played shortly before the final. Teams booted out of the tournament in the quarter-final stage were each given a soccer kit and one soccer ball.

The Man of the Match in the final game was Mpfariseni Neluvhanda of Maelula United Brothers. The Youngest Player in the Tournament award was presented to Vusani Tshiafula of Maelula United Brothers. Tiyabi Mathebula of Bungeni Young Tigers was the recipient of the best goalkeeper award. Sello Molewa of Maelula United Brothers received the top goal scorer and the Player of the Tournament awards. Molewa scored a total of four goals in the tournament.

The most disciplined player’s award was presented to Zwothe Nevuri of Masakona Young Tigers. The head coach of Maelula United Brothers, Mr Lawrence Mawela, took home the best coach award.

The winners of the individual awards were each presented with trophies and cash ranging from R700 to R1 200 during the ceremony. Thirty-two teams from around Vhembe District took part in the tournament.
