The opening matches for the annual Vhuthu Mobile Fridge Soccer Tournament will be played at the Gondeni Stadium this weekend. The tournament will be officially launched during a ceremony to be held at the Gavhi’s Car Wash at Gondeni village this afternoon (Thursday).
As usual, sixteen teams from Gondeni and the surrounding areas will take part in the tournament. The toss for the opening matches will be conducted during the ceremony.
The sixteen teams that will take part in this year’s edition of the tournament are Mbahe Freedom Birds, Banyini Flying Swallows, Jim Kone FC, Sterkstroom Real Chiefs, Matondoni Home Sweepers, Tshamutilikwa Fire Boys, Tshififi Development, Malamangwa Scotch Winters, Matsika Shooting Stars, Tshikonelo Champions, Masokolara Peace Makers, Shayandima Dynamos, Mangondi Young Brothers, Mukoma All Stars, Thohoyandou Bayern and FC Basel.
Four matches will be played on Saturday with the remaining four scheduled for Sunday. The champions will take home a whopping R5,000, a soccer kit and a floating trophy. The runners-up will be presented with R2,500 and a soccer kit. The third placed side will receive R1,500 while an amount of R1,000 is awaiting a team that will finish in the fourth place.
The semi-final and final matches will be played at the same venue on Sunday, 25 August. FC Basel are the defending champions.
