Athletes from Vhembe and other regions will battle for honours during the Thavhani Mall Three-in-One Road Race in Thohoyandou on Saturday.

Participants will compete in a half-marathon (21.1 km), a 10 km, or a 5 km race, with an option to compete in a 5 km walk. More than 300 athletes are expected to take part in the half-marathon.

The main race will start at 06:00 at Thavhani Mall, where it will also finish.

One of the organisers, Mavhona, said spectators and competitors could expect fireworks this year. “We have managed to draw big names to this race, which will give it the stature it deserves.”

The winner of the half-marathon will receive R1,000, while the second prize is R500.

Well-known runner Sam Munyai is determined to win the race. “I don’t think it will be an easy race because I expect a large number of good runners on the day,” he said. He added that he had prepared well and did not want to disappoint his supporters.
