The value of community radio stations is seen in the quality of the efforts of talented, hardworking and skillful radio presenters.

Ngavhelo Bluemonkey Khavhu is one such talented and intuitive presenter and producer at Makhado FM.

He joined the station on 16 August 2009 as the producer of a reggae programme previously known as Sinda U Mphe Mutuli. The show was being hosted by Khakhathi of Khakhathi and Friends then. “It felt good working with Khakhathi as I also held him in high regard for his music,” he said.

Ngavheli has developed his skills as a producer and radio anchor through the years. A resident of Mphadzha village at Ha-Nthabalala area, Ngavhelo became aware of his talent for the radio when he was growing up in the rocky village. He attended Madabude Primary School and Thwalima Secondary School.

At a later stage, he decided to study further and get a qualification that would place him in a good position to work for the radio. He obtained his radio production diploma at Boston City Campus and Business College in Pretoria.

“I have come to realise, through personal and practical experience, that working at a community radio station adds value to my life as a social and human being,” he said. “I get to meet new people from different cultural backgrounds in the line of my duty.”

His sense of humour, topical research and knowledge about the history of African music has endeared him to the hearts of many listens who make sure that they do not miss even a single live broadcast of the reggae programme that he came to present at a later stage.

He is a lover of good music across genres such as soul, reggae and country. He was also a music compiler for all programmes within the radio station. “I love music, because it fosters a sense of unity and good relations among people,” he said. “Bob Marley had summed up the importance of music so well when he said ‘When it hits you, you feel no pain’.”

He loves South Africa for the humanity that its people demonstrate to one another and fellow Africans and all visitors.

“To me the radio is a medium through which I am able to reach a wider audience who expect to get entertainment, information and education,” he said.

He is now an executive producer and he presents three programmes, Ahoy! (reggae music on Saturdays, 12:00-15:00), The Bridge (Monday-Friday, 12:00-14:30), and Jazz (Sundays, 12:00-15:00).
