Rokundwa Khuba, better known as Rockzie, was the big winner at the annual Phalaphala FM Tshivenda Music Awards (TSHIMAs), held at the Nandoni Kalahari Waterfront on Saturday, 7 December.
The event was attended by prominent guests, including the MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Tshitereke Matibe, mayors from various municipalities, SABC board members and senior staff, artists, and members of the community.
Rockzie, a 20-year-old singer from Madabani Hasinthumule, was nominated in two categories: Best Newcomer and Best Tshivenda Song of the Year. She was elated to receive double recognition and thanked the team at Miriri Productions for their support.
The late local gospel guru Emmanuel Mamphogoro was honoured posthumously with a special award for his contribution to the music industry.
Speaking at the event, MEC Matibe urged artists to compose music that carries educational messages for the nation. He also encouraged them to reconnect with their roots by incorporating traditional instruments in their music.
Phalaphala FM’s programme manager, Ms Sharon Ravele, expressed her satisfaction with the success of the event. “Without a doubt, the TSHIMA brand has become a flagship on the local calendar of events, a true highlight. We are committed to providing a platform that rewards and recognises local talent,” she said.
Ravele also mentioned that the station is open to partnerships with other institutions that offer similar initiatives. “We are all excited about it. It revives the culture and embraces the diversity of languages represented here,” she added.
