The CANSA Relay event on 23 and 24 March is a first for Louis Trichardt. Organiser Dirk Meissenheimer (front, middle) says that 29 teams have registered and that they need at least a hundred teams. The youth group History Makers of the Agapé Christian Centre are challenging all youth groups, young adults, churches, cell groups and groups of all faiths to book a stand and participate. Pictured with Meissenheimer are some members of the History Makers, and to his right is Ms Michele Pulford, who has attended two similar events and does not ever want to miss it.

“The way the CANSA Relay event unites a town is just amazing. It brings the community together in a way you can’t really explain. I never want to miss it,” says Ms Michele Pulford who is exultant to hear that Louis Trichardt will host their first CANSA Relay for Life.
Pulford has attended two CANSA relay events in Mokopane and has witnessed the uniting power of the event. “It was a uniting of all cultures and races, with no political divide. The grannies were there, the moms with their prams, the teens, even paraplegics in wheelchairs.. all to support the fight against cancer and to celebrate life and give hope,” Pulford said.
The challenge is on to get more than a hundred teams participating in the event which runs from 18:00 on 23 March to 06:00 on 24 March.
The youth group History Makers of the Agapé Christian Centre are calling out all youth groups, young adults, churches, cell groups and groups of all faiths to book a stand and participate.
“I am grateful that the youth is getting some fire. We challenge all churches and groups. It is for a worthy cause,” said Mr Dirk Meissenhemer, one of the organisers of the event. The funds raised will go towards CANSA Polokwane which serves a large area in Limpopo.
Meissenheimer says that 29 teams have registered and paid by Monday morning this week. “We need at least a hundred teams in order for Louis Trichardt to be allowed to continue staging this event next year. There will be fun and entertainment right through the night while people are walking around the town’s rugby field. And I tell you, big men cry when the candles are lit during the Luminaria Ceremony to remember those who have fallen to cancer,” Meissenheimer said.
The bags for the Luminaria Ceremony can be obtained form Heila Oosthuizen (082 677 4934) at Mount Fuji Motors. For registration of teams or more information, contact Dirk Meissenheimer on 082 789 3927, Sunelia Oelofse on 084 526 1478 or Teresa Vollgraaf on 082 378 5364.
