TSHIHENI – The burning of shacks and houses as a result of paraffin lamp explosions, will be a thing of the past at Tshiheni Mademeni, after the village was connected to an electrical power scheme for the first time on Monday.
In his speech during the ceremony, MEC Joe Maswanganyi said the community of Tshiheni converged two years ago to chart their future development. Eskom advised them to contribute some money towards a fund that will be utilised for the connection of the affected families.
Every household contributed an amount of R500 and ultimately an amount of R22 000 was collected. This community's contribution paved the way for the electrification of 80 households.
Electricity is a basic requirement for improved livelihood. People cannot have light or cook without electricity. Electricity reduces the difficulty of having to walk many kilometres looking for firewood.
This project is indeed a great achievement for the municipality and the whole community of the Mademeni area.
Real development will only take place when the community is prepared to take full responsibility for such development. Maswanganyi congratulated the traditional leader of Tshiheni for leading in a democratic way, bringing changes and necessary social development. In a province that is defined by poverty, hunger and unemployment, the most effective mechanism to ameliorate the conditions is implementation of projects by the community.
He added that the Thulamela municipality is doing a great job for the residents of this municipality. About 153 houses have been built for Vhutalu Village, 45 at Tshilungwi village, 25 at Makwarani and 38 at Madadeni.
The municipality has recently gravelled and opened a street for the very first time in the history of this area. The damaged bridge at Tshilungwi has been reconstructed.
These developments only show the determination and vision of this municipality to bring a better life to its people.
The MEC congratulated AA Electricity Consultants, engineer Lufune Mphaphuli and Associates, the municipality, the whole community and Eskom for their contribution towards the success of this project.
He ads that change can only take place when we pledge to contribute towards it as a society.
The Project chairperson Mr Rollet Nenzhelele said electricity was in the plan of every community member. He praised the Thulamela municipality for remembering them in the electrification of villages.
