LOUIS TRICHARDT – ABSA Bank made history this week with the appointment of Mr Elijah Chomela as the local ABSA branch's first black manager. Mr Chomela is also the fifth branch manager to be appointed in accordance with ABSA's employment equity programme in the province.
Mr Chomela is originally from Tzaneen and was appointed on November 25. As part of his responsibilities, Mr Chomela will oversee the official opening and management of ABSA's first Self Service Centre in Thohoyandou on December 5. The personnel at this branch will also be appointed in accordance with the Employment Equity programme. The centre will concentrate on electronic banking, including ATM deposits and withdrawals, as well as the opening of new accounts.
According to Mr Deon Loots, ABSA's General Manager in the Limpopo Province, the opening of the new service centre in Thohoyandou is the first step in taking banking to the people, especially people in the rural areas. He said that they are at present also looking at other third party alliances to ensure service delivery to people in remote areas. Making use of mobile ATMs, says Mr Loots, will support this service.
In regard to the Employment Equity programme, Mr Loots said that ABSA is serious about appointing people in accordance with this programme and that their appointment percentage is at present 7% above the national average for financial services and 9% above ABSA's national average. At present, he added, ABSA is also aiming to open yet another service centre at Mankweng near the University of the North. This service will be supported by the student bureau and will amongst others assist in the granting of student loans. This centre should open at the end of February. The reason for the opening of this centre is mainly due to the fact that the province boasts some 42 000 students.
