Shock as SABC boss passes away

News - Date: 26 April 2013

The community of Limpopo is mourning the sudden death of Limpopo SABC general manager Mr Victor “Dynaross” Ravhuanzwo (55). He passed away at the MediClinic last Wednesday morning after a short illness.

Ravhuanzwo was said to have collapsed in his home on Sunday two weeks ago and was transferred to Polokwane.

He worked for the South African Broadcasting Corporation for 17 years.

The spokesperson of SABC, Mr Kaizer Kganyago, was at a loss for words. “This is a great loss not only for the SABC and the family, but for the whole community. To lose such an iconic leader at this time is painful. We are just praying that God gives us all comfort in this time of grief,” he said.

Kganyago described Ravhuanzwo as someone who was always there for everybody when they needed him. He said that he made sure that they got the best and encouraged them to set themselves goals in life. "He has left a void that cannot be filled and I will respect and miss him always," said Kganyago.

He said that Ravhuanzwo was dedicated to his work and that the SABC entrusted him with a huge responsibility of heading the Limpopo Province. He carried out his duties with excellence and devoted his life to serving the organization diligently as was expected of him. His paramount concern was to fulfil the mandate of the SABC of building an informed society and broadcast for total citizen empowerment.

A friend, Mr Ronald Makhadi, said they had worked closely together after the formation of the Venda Football Association, (Vefa). Ravhuanzwo worked as general manager of the association and was later appointed deputy chairperson and chairperson. He later became the deputy chairperson of Safa Great North East Province.

According to him, Victor put the Vhembe region on the map through his managing skills. He described Victor as a matchless hard worker, whose works speak for themselves.

Family spokesperson Mr Shumani Ravhuanzwo said the family was saddened by the passing away of Victor. “He was seen as a light to the family and the nation at large. We are truly devastated, as we have lost a pillar of the family. Everyone looked up to him for advice,” he said.

He said that they were greatly humbled by the love and support shown by the people of Limpopo. He said they would not have survived without the help they received from the community. He further said that they were happy as a family that Ravhuanzwo was someone who lived life to the fullest.

His career history began when he taught at Thengwe High. He left teaching and joined the railways. After two years, he joined PG Glass. He then joined Radio Thohoyandou as marketing manager before appointed by the SABC.

He held several positions in the corporation and was appointed marketing manager for the Limpopo radio stations in 1996. In 1997, he became sales manager and in 2000 he was promoted to station manager of Phala-Phala FM. In 2006 he was appointed as provincial general manager of SABC Limpopo.

The funeral service will start at 07:00 at the Ravhuanzwos' house in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) before proceeding to Lukau for the burial.

Mr Ravhuanzwo is survived by his wife, Grace.
