Prof Derrick Mashau and Dr Rebecca Lagat from Kenya, shortly after she had received her doctorate from the Northwest University

Well-known columnist of Limpopo Mirror Prof Derrick Mashau recently yielded his 11th doctoral candidate at the Potchefstroom campus of the Northwest University (NWU).
Mashau, who is currently employed in the Department of Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology at the University of South Africa, continues guiding PhD and Masters students from NWU as part of his academic citizenship.
One of these students is Rebecca Lagat from Kenya. She graduated on 11 September with a thesis on Mission to Muslims in the light of God’s mission (Missio Dei): A study of select evangelical churches in Eldoret, Kenya. According to Mashau, she made a unique contribution in the field of missiology by providing a model of communication which can minimise the tension between Christians and Muslims in the African context.
“The model can be applied in other parts of sub-Saharan Africa as well. While I celebrate this unique achievement, I bemoan the fact that there are few locals who pursue their studies to this level. It is shocking to realize that a very small percentage of people in our country own a PhD degree, and therefore this should serve as a challenge to all of us. We must love education enough, irrespective of all the odds that we face in our country’s educational system, to study to the highest level,” Mashau added.
