"Your problems will be solved in two years," Giyani municipality promise

News - Date: 19 April 2002

GIYANI -A Visit by SABC's ML FM radio station to Giyani last Friday proved that there is lack of political tolerance and a power struggle in the Greater Giyani region.

ML FM's purpose for coming to Giyani was to link the Greater Giyani Municipality and the community to address several issues affecting the community of Giyani and to check on programmes since their last visit in 2000.

Ms Tiyiselani Maswanganyi and Mr Mlunghisi Xivamba of the Tiko axi etleli program were leading a hot debate, which was broadcast live from the Giyani Banquet Hall. The guests on the program were the mayor of Giyani Municipality, Mr Solomon Ndindani, a representative of the ANC Mr Hyke Moroti, Ximoko was represented by Mr Solly Mcacwa, Johannes Sithole of the PAC and James Ndlovu of the UDM.

The mayor explained that the local government managed to complete sports centres, electrified villages, and constructed RDP houses, about 500 disaster houses distributed to 22 wards. They also spend R209 million on road reconstructions.

As the members of the political parties started to show disrespect towards each other one member of the community commented that it was embarrassing to see political parties discussing politics, instead of helping out the community by addressing problems like water, electricity and cleaning of bushes that surround their houses.

One even asked "won't you be humiliated if we have a cholera outbreak in Giyani?" From the discussion it was noted that water is the main problem that Giyani residents are complaining about. It was also stated that the water is cut off almost every day in Giyani.

The Giyani municipality responded that water supply is prioritised in the whole province. This is a reason they appointed Lepele Water Board to look at the problems causing shortage of water and also to improve the service. They promised the SABC, members of the communities listening from their homes and people in the banquet hall that within two years their problems will be history.
