Lightning strike lands 19 pupils in hospital

News - Date: 29 April 2005

HA-MUILA – The 19 Grade 11 pupils of David Luvhimbi Secondary School at Ha-Muila who were struck by lightning on Monday were treated in the Elim Hospital and discharged the same day.

One of the learners struck by lightning, Ambani Hadzhi (18), told Mirror that “before I left home, there were dark clouds, lightning and thunder with no rain. The moment we were in the classroom, more scaring lightening and thunder started. When it happened, I felt the earth shaking, and suddenly, an unusual smoke smell was in the classroom.”

She said that most of her classmates were momentarily paralysed as a result of the lightning. She said when they were being rushed to the local clinic, it was raining heavily. Asked about her feelings, Ambani said that pains in her right leg and in other parts of her body are still making it difficult to forget the frightening incident. “If I see that there are dark clouds before I go to school, I will stay at home. I am now scared to go to school when there is lightning and thunder. I think it would be better to die at home.”

Mr Lawrence Magoro, a teacher at the school, said that everyone at the school was still shocked. “We also pray on Tuesday with other local schools,” he said. A community liaison officer at Elim hospital, Mr Avhatakali Marole, said it was the the busiest week in the history of the hospital, following the lightning incident, as well as the bus and train collision at Muraleni.
