Who was Devenish, Munnik, Jeppe, Krogh or Snyman, and why have their names been given to our town's streets? Where was Songozwi and what does Hlanganani refer to?
In a new column, the Zoutpansberger wants to delve into the history of the town’s street names and try and answer some of these questions. The column will focus on the early history of the town and try to highlight the people who played a significant role in the region more than 100 years ago.
In order to do so, we rely on the readers to send us information on these pioneers. Do you have photos of a Cllr Boy Schimper or perhaps an old snapshot of Celliers Street? How many of the descendants of these early pioneers still live in the region?
The column will not aim to give history lessons, but it is important that the facts are carefully checked, using various references. We are, however, more interested in the personal stories of the people whose “streets” we cross every day.
