Plans to turn ZCC into tourism attraction

News - Date: 06 October 2006

Plans are under way to turn the Zion Christian Church centre at Moria into a tourism attraction centre.

This was revealed by Ronnie Mabena, senior manager corporate communications for the Limpopo Tourism and Parks Board.

Mabena says: “Negotiations are underway between us and the church so that tourists can be allowed to visit Moria, near Boyen, during pilgrimages and other times. Because of its history of being the oldest and most supported church in Africa, we regard ZCC as our icon and many tourists have shown interest in visiting the church,” says Mabena.

Mabena says tour guides have been making inquiries on behalf of their clients who want to visit the church. “What is happening now is that we are busy negotiating with the church leaders to open the gates for tourists whenever they would like to go there. We hope that, before December, our negotiations will be over so that tourists can go there,” says Mabena.

Mabena says the church centre will also be developed as a link to Modjadji’s Kloof.

Tour guides are being addressed on the issues of customer care and also to understand that very soon they must consider taking tourists to the church.

The idea of allowing tourists to visit ZCC was first made public by Premier Sello Moloto during his first address after the local government elections.

More than three million people visit ZCC during pilgrimages held over Easter and the December holidays.
