DZWERANI- The rural community members of Dzwerani Lwamondo, together with the Department of Education in Limpopo, officially opened seven additional classrooms during a ceremony at Dzwerana Primary School on Friday.
The total cost of the building project was about R300 000.
In 1999, the school management and community members started to raise funds with a vision and mission to build classrooms. Dedicated and devoted parents decided to pay fifty rand, once a year. The money was invested at different banks. The parents also raised funds by supporting school activities.
Dzwerani Primary School was established in April 1937, and was formerly known as Luonde Native School, under the Berlin Mission Lutheran Church of South Africa. Due to the poor standard and shortage of classrooms, the school management went out to get donors for renovating their school and building more classrooms.
One of the donors, Timbadola Company in Levubu, which deals in wood materials in Limpopo, was touched by the plight and poverty of the school. When the community reached the roofing level, they asked for assistance from Timbadola to help them with the roofing.
The human resources clerk of Timbadola, Mr Johnson Lukheli, said they decided to assist the communitiy and school management, because they were prepared to work for their success.
“It is not the first time that we have donated our timber and building materials to schools. We have already built and donated many schools around Limpopo province. Our donations focus on those schools which have done something. This is a part of ploughing back into the community,” said Lukheli.
The principal of the school, Mr Russel Tshikalaha, said that through the completion of seven additional classrooms, the learners are going to learn hard and improve their results.
“Due to the lack of classrooms, we were teaching in overcrowded conditions. It was difficult for the teachers to see absent learners. But I’m very proud because the school management and community members are still singing one song,” said Tshikalaha.
The senior district manager of education in Vhembe District, Mr Masotsha Mathivha, told Mirror that the community of Dzwerani in Lwamondo in Venda made history in the Limpopo province.
“It is responsibility of the department of education to build classrooms in the rural and urban areas. But the community helped the department in building classrooms. We as the department are going to help the school by supplying the furniture still needed. We are also going to put them on our priority list to add more classrooms because the school is still overcrowded. The department is pleading with the community to follow in the footsteps of the Dzwerani primary school management and parents who built classrooms,” said Mathivha.
